Biotech sector in India. Undergraduation in biotechnology.

"Biotechnology is the buzzword", "biotech booms","biotech-the future" ; scream the headlines  in all the newspapers. But is Biotech really booming?  If so, why are biotech undergrads like me reluctant to take up a masters in biotech?

Firstly, it is the age of instant gratification. And I confess I have materialistic needs too.

When freshers get 2.5-5 lacs per annum in a software company, why on earth would someone enter a biotech co where you get paid peanuts in comparison?(irrespective of whether you are a B.tech, masters or pHd) .

And scientific jobs are not abundant in the biotech sector. They are highly competitive.

Besides, in which sector of engineering are you required to pay for your internship.

The biotech boom is an illusion. So its better to chill your heels and not jump the gun in taking up a specialized course like biotech in your undergrads. A Bachelors in science would be better as it would give you an idea about your research capabilities; then you can jump into specialization and research in an area of choice.

  1. HI!!!! THe thing abt difference of pay is def true!!! but the difference comes when ppl choose the career outta choice its different... on a materialistic note - not biotech!!! its not gonna satisfy ur every need!!! but i read somewhere it is the most insulated field in recession... so young entrepreneurs can check out their options in the field ;)

  2. I am glad that one of my friends started a blog !!..I read your comments about biotechnology. I agree with first half, and totally disagree with second half.. Biotechnology is not a Illusion. You need to be believe 100% in what you are doing. Biotechnology need lot of patience. I know that 95% of the population are going to disagree with me but, I believe that biotechnology is only sector which is untapped and sector where you can prove your worth .

Please answer few questions regarding IT jobs ?

    1. where are you going to be after 10 years in IT industry?
    2. Do u find your job challenging ?
    3. Are you satisfied with the work you are doing ?
    4. What do you say about your work after retirement ?

IF YOU DONT HAVE SATISFYING ANSWER FOR EVEN 1 QUESTION, THEN YOU ARE WRONG ...

  3. Hi Sub. Thanks for the interesting reply.
You do have a valid point when you say that Biotech is a sector where one can prove one's worth. I agree that biotech is untapped. It does require a lot of "PATIENCE". And, like Hema says, biotech can definitely offer loads of opportunities for entrepreneurship.

So, considering all the above, it is meant only for people who have a real long-term goal in mind.

The above blog is not meant to discourage the folk from taking up biotech; rather, it's objective is to caution the hordes of students who want to take up the subject just because it gets lots of fancy attention in the media.

And on IT, I just wanted to prove my point that it's not for those who dream of minting money. And software engineers definitely earn in multiples of what's earned by bio scientists (In most countries).
About the other aspects like job satisfaction, challenges and satisfaction; it all boils down to individuals.
